The Goals of Our Founders

Founding Board Member & Little Liberia Descendant, Adrienne Farrar Houël speaking when the Freeman Houses were placed on the “11 Most Endangered Historic Places” list by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 2018.

1

Use the restoration of the houses as a catalyst to revitalize the South End by creating a cultural district that reflects the area’s historic Black and immigrant roots.

2

Establish a sustainable African American heritage, education, and research center.

3

Use landscape architecture to design and reconstruct outdoor and public spaces that:

• Reflect the changing historical relationships between workers of diverse ethnic backgrounds; and

• Celebrate the roles they played in local, state, and national history.

4

Provide a forum (and historical context) for discussing community and state-wide initiatives that promote racial healing and socio-economic justice.
